7:00 am
good morning. i'm kris sanchez. coming up on "today in the bay," we are one win away. giants getting ready to take on detroit tigers in game four of the world series. we'll take you live to detroit for a preview of today's game. and flight cancellations already several airlines canceling flights to the east coast offering to change people with no fees. this is "today in the bay." good morning to you. looking live at a beautiful picture of san francisco all blue now but it will be a sea of orange as we approach game time tonight in detroit. thanks so much for joining us. i'm chris sanchez along with meteorologist anthony slaughter in for rob mayeda.
7:01 am
there are a number of things. clearly watching the game and forecast for the game in detroit and we're watching that storm on the east coast and then of course we have rain in the forecast coming up later for us. >> even our own weather here at home. quiet today. not expecting any rain. if you have plans for outdoor activities go, for it. 48 in novato. 56 in san francisco. 58 in san jose. this is what is controlling our weather. high pressure in control off the coast so it's keeping clouds away and keeping the fog away as well. we'll see clear skies through the day but as chris mentioned there is a chance for halloween rain. it's going to be late and in fact yesterday at this time we were talking about showers in the forecast. it looks like it's going to be after midnight on halloween. if you do have plans for trick-or-treating, it looks like you are good to go. detroit, you can see outer bands of hurricane sandy beginning to pull into some of the great lakes. it's just east of detroit right now. it does not look like there's going to be any rain in the forecast. however, it will be close.
7:02 am
lots of cloud cover especially and maybe even patches of drizzle. a cold, drizzle in detroit. we're talking about 40s with windchills in the 30s. if you are here at home watching, it's going to be beautiful. 74 in san francisco. 78 in oakland today. 80 in san jose. east bay, livermore, 85. north bay, 84 in santa rosa. if you are making plans for halloween, something to watch. we were talking yesterday looks like rain. does look like it will be pushed back a little bit. the system offshore is slow to move in. wednesday night after midnight is the latest. >> primarily north bay not so much south bay. >> thursday everyone. >> thank you very much. just one more win. giants are in detroit hoping to sweep the tigers in game four of the world series and if they win tonight, they clinch the title. they are up three games to none in best of seven series and odds are in the giants favor. in world series history, only one team has ever recovered from
7:03 am
a three game to nothing deficit. we have live team coverage. we go live to comerica park. people always want their team to win at home. i think they'll take it if they win tonight. >> reporter: i like to see them win at home. giants fans haven't seen this ball club celebrate in a long time on their home field. they want to get it done in detroit. they know how momentum can shift just like that. another stellar pitching performance last night from ryan vogelsong. unbelievable to watch the pitchers in the postseason. in the last six games they won, starting pitchers have only given up two runs. that's unprecedented. matt takes the mound tonight to try to nail it down.
7:04 am
>> of course you can watch more of the giants on comcast sports net after the game. east bay, fans were cheering on a hometown hero. giants short stop brandon crawford. >> reporter: it's a dream come true for brandon crawford who is now part of the team he grew up rooting for. >> a stud. i think he's just a great player. >> a short stop has made a name for himself in major league baseball. in pleasanton where he grew up, people have been watching him for years. >> this is his sophomore year and junior year.
7:05 am
>> his baseball coach where he graduated in 2005 says crawford just kept getting better and better. >> coaching him he was one of those athletes that everything you could give him, he would take as far as instruction and then he would take that instruction and process it and then develop it. and so the next day he would be ready for the next part. >> crawford's coach says he's a great athlete but it's his instincts that make him a standout. players had the world series on their minds so they wouldn't miss a thing. they say it's great to see a local boy make good. >> he's been doing really well. fielding well. hitting even better. >> his parents have been season ticket holders for many, many years and now they get to see their son play on the giants. >> i think it inspires every little boy. >> last night crawford had an rbi single in the second inning giving the giants a 2-0 lead which was the final score.
7:06 am
since it's possible the giants could win the world series in detroit tonight or tomorrow, the city of san francisco wants people to enjoy the game together tonight and possibly celebrate a win. the city plans to host a viewing party at civic center plaza. mayor ed lee says the city will set up a jumbotron so fans can cheer on the team just like they did in 2010. that's the video that we're seeing right there. stay with nbc bay area for continuing coverage. we have live reports coming up for you in this newscast and also at 8:30 on a special edition of nbc bay area news. and all day long you can go to nbcbayarea.com to get the latest giants and world series news and pictures any time. new this morning, oakley police are searching for the person who opened fire at a lounge overnight. it happened just after 1:30 this

morning. a man was shot two or three times. he was rushed to the hospital but it was too late and he later died. police are investigating and looking for leads. another developing story we're following this morning. a massive storm that could affect one in five americans. if you have friends, family, colleagues on the east coast, they are in the storm, rather the path of the storm. the main concern is that hurricane sandy will join forces with a winter storm and turn into an 800-mile wide system. people from the carolinas to maine are preparing for the winds and the rain and airlines are already offering to change people's flights for free. some airlines are already canceling flights as well. >> we got the alert our flight was canceled. >> reporter: they had to cut short their vacation and are trying to get back to new york. it hasn't been an easy trip for them coming or going on virgin
7:08 am
america. >> coming here they canceled our first flight and put us on the next flight. we're just trying to get them beat by coming and flying now. >> reporter: airlines are tracking the storm to decide which flights to cancel. some including virgin, jetblue and united are offering to waive penalty fees if someone wants to change their flight dates or cancel flights from certain airports over the next few days. >> right now they are just trying to see what the major impact is going to be and what airports are going to be affected and then try to reduce the amount of impact on passengers. >> reporter: the advice from airport officials for anyone planning to fly in the next few days is to keep track of the storm and keep checking the airline websites for changes and set up automatic alerts to your phone or e-mail of flight changes. >> they need to figure out when are they flying, where are they going, are those airports impacted? >> we'll go to philly if we have to. if we can.
7:09 am
>> reporter: you're going to try in a roundabout way to get home? >> yes. >> in other developing news this morning, no major reports in hawaii after a tsunami threat stemming from an earthquake in canada. the tsunami warning for hawaii has now been downgraded to an advisory after the first waves were lower than expected. beaches and harbors are still closed statewide and the warning was triggered by a magnitude 7.7 earthquake off canada's west coast where there were no reports of serious damage. here on the west coast, there is still a tsunami advisory starting at 80 miles north of san francisco. overnight there were waves having highs of 1.4 feet in crescent city and marina cove to .5 feet in san francisco bay and .4 in monterey and anthony just told me the advisory has now been canceled. that is good news. still ahead on "today in the bay," we will take a look at how

7:11 am
7:12 am
good morning once again. we're looking live at san jose where it is going to be a nice mild day if you want to celebrate halloween early because there are raindrops on that seven-day forecast. we'll talk with anthony slaughter again in just a little bit. we are learning more about the nanny in new york city accused of killing two children with ties to the bay area. friends and family of 50-year-old yoselyn ortega says she had been having financial problems and emotional problems but don't know why she would have attacked the children. the mother of the children found her son and daughter stabbed to death in the family's manhattan apartment on thursday. police say ortega was lying

7:14 am
7:15 am
7:16 am
good morning. tiny bank of fog there in the distance. it will be a nice time to watch the giants hopefully sweep the series tonight at civic center plaza. better to watch in the city than in detroit. that's for sure. >> for sure. temperatures in the 40s and 30s in detroit and they even have some drizzle up there. we are talking about beautiful conditions here at home. good morning. i'm anthony slaughter in nbc bay area weather center tracking chilly readings here this morning. 48 in novato. 56 in san francisco. 58 in san jose right now. we don't have much to talk about on the satellite or radar loop as you can see all of our activity to our north up into washington and over near portland. seattle looking at rain showers. at home, not talking about much. our next system developing off the coast and it is still spinning in the pacific. you can see that upper level low. this is what's headed our way by the time we get into halloween. good news if you were with us yesterday at this time we mentioned the chance for rain in the forecast for halloween.
7:17 am
it does look like the system has slowed down just a bit because yesterday at this time it was 1,000 miles offshore and it hasn't moved much. it looks like wednesday after the trick-or-treating event it will move in. hurricane sandy to the eastern seaboard. even beginning to pull in a few showers up toward toronto stretching down toward cleveland. there's detroit right there. you can see our next system that cold front is beginning to pull toward green bay with snow toward minneapolis. that's where the systems will merge but it does not look they anticipate rain in the forecast tonight for game four of the world series. there will be lots of cloud cover around but temperatures will be cold. breezy as well. temperatures falling back to the 40s. windchills in detroit will be in the 30s. by the time the game gets over, 20s. aren't you glad you're not there? let's look at hurricane sandy. you can see the showers already beginning to pull in as i showed you up toward the mid-atlantic. cape hatteras feeling the brunt
7:18 am
of this. that's at 75 miles per hour less sustained wind gusts right now. as it moves through the atlantic it's going to eventually make a beeline toward new jersey and new york city. this is going to be about a category 1 by the time it makes landfall. we were talking last year tropical storm irene you may recall wasn't really that devastating. this system is going to be about two to three times more powerful when it moves onshore. you can see estimated rainfall. anywhere from 7 to 13 inches of rain and that does not include the storm surge so we're talking about storm surge up to three to five feet. that's the whole ocean moving in. if you have been to new york city, you know the lay of the land. it's very low there. our thoughts and prayers go out to the folks in new england. as far as our home temperatures go, we'll look at comfortable conditions. 78 in oakland. 78 in santa cruz. comfortable in san francisco at
7:19 am
74. seven-day forecast does tell the story. here it is. wednesday into thursday in a rain arrives. it will be late. if you have plans to take the kids out first perhaps for trick-or-treating, you and your two daughters, the cobra and giraffe, if you are making plans to head out, it looks good. keeping our fingers crossed. an important forecast to watch. we'll watch this this week. rob mayeda will be in. it looks good. keep the fingers crossed. >> we hope for a good halloween and the best for the east coast. thank you very much. besides hitting the biggest story of the world series is pitching. giants ace matt cain will take the mound as starting pitcher in game four and "today in the bay" lauren scott has more. good morning to you, lauren. >> reporter: let's tell anthony something quick. aren't you glad you're not in detroit? i'm thrilled to be in detroit.
7:20 am
the sun comes out here and there. there's a silver lining and for the giants things are looking really good with their ace taking to the hill tonight. that's matt cain. think of this guy, a perfect game this season. earlier against the houston astros. he's had world series spotlight before back in 2010 when he was in game two pitching in a dominant factor. great in alcs. getting things together. the team rides with their horse. that's what they call him. the horse. we wanted to talk to some baseball luminaries. a world series manager and a guy who has been here before in detroit winning a world series and throwing a no-hitter in the same year. take a look at what they have to say about matt cain and the impact he makes. >> he came to the big leagues with plus stuff but he had the right attitude as far as learning to be a professional. he looked around at the veterans
7:21 am
and he saw how hard you have to work between starts. it's a combination of his talent and experience and desire that he has to compete. >> consistency. he never gets excited. he executes. great coordination. delivery is so good. nothing phases him. >> it's one of those deals where you either have that mentality or you don't and some guys relish it. it depends on how well you feel at the time. matt cain has been a bulldog. he's adding to his resume for that hall of fame some day if he continues. >> reporter: that was jack morris, of course, who in 1984 pitched a no-hitter for the detroit tigers and they went onto win the world series. now the opportunity for wrap things up. it was fun to hear peter say that he's like a human metronome. when we come back later in the show, i want to introduce you to
7:22 am
a giants fan who all season long has been living in a cave. we'll leave it at that. see you in a bit. >> can't wait to hear about that one. thank you very much. the giants are not in san francisco, fans are heading to bars to watch the game. the question is has giants orange translated into some san francisco green? stephanie chuang reports. >> what can i say? >> reporter: the nova restaurant and bar sits pretty a few blocks from at&t park. the owner says the overflow from the world series is even better than the one in 2010. >> the giants have definitely had a bigger following. >> thompson says now good regular season games double his business. games one and two of the series -- >> i would say maybe triple. january is a tough month for restaurants and bars. it just kind of gives you that
7:23 am
little extra cushion that you need to get through. >> san francisco chamber of commerce vice president says there are no official estimates for how much more money the world series is bringing to the city by the bay. >> the october is a busy time in the bay area any way but that puts icing on top of the cake and helps the entire region. if san francisco is full, the overflow goes to oakland. overflow goes down the peninsula. >> reporter: the series has a long-term impact giving a shot of the bay and attracting people and businesses contemplating their next vacation or convention destination. >> you see san francisco and the bay area on a night like last night or the night before in a world series, that helps people make decisions. >> reporter: as for the rest of the series -- >> if things don't work out for them in detroit, they're going to come back. i guess in a weird sort of way that's what businesses here want. we win no matter what. the excitement is going to be there no matter where they are
7:24 am
when they win. >> reporter: stephanie chuang, nbc bay area news. >> detroit is a picture of a world series economic home run. the spokesperson from the convention and visitors bureau there says tiger home games generate $5.5 million for the city and they hope to generate much more from the word series games. we'll have a live report from detroit on today's game four coming up. still ahead on "today in the bay," healthy halloween tweets. we have ideas to great alternatives to candy that are nutritious and tasty. afternoon for watching the giants sweep at civic center plaza this afternoon. thanks for joining us. i'm chris sanchez along with meteorologist anthony slaughter in for rob mayeda and the mayor made it happen. was able to broadcast the game tonight at civic center plaza. it will be nice weather for that. >> beautiful weather. by the evening it will start to cool off a bit but we'll be in the 70s in san francisco later on. it doesn't get much better than that. cool right now this morning. 56 degrees in the city. 48 in novato. 58 in san jose. you'll notice we don't have much cloud cover to talk about. we're still watching that area of high pressure off the coast keeping us warm not only for today but through tomorrow and then as we head toward tuesday that will slide to our south so we'll cool off. lots of sunshine. clear skies. a warming wind. as you make plans for halloween late, it looks like after midnight on wednesday we're expecting to see a bit of rain. if you have plans to do it early, trick-or-treat, doesn't look like you expect rain. 74 in san francisco. 81 in redwood city.
7:31 am

7:32 am
against max scherzer trying to put the nail in the coffin. so you get some unlikely heros. you had blanco last night with a triple. brandon crawford with a single. they don't have a lot of offense right now but when you are pitching as well as these guys are, you're going to win ball games. fun it celebrate in san francisco on their home turf but they want to win tonight or tomorrow night and take home the trophy. >> all right. thanks for getting up bright and early with us this morning. the giants continue to give their fans something to cheer about. the weather is going to be chilly so hopefully they'll be cheering with mittens on and by game time, 5:07, 44 degrees and cloudy by 7:00 dipping to 42. by 9:00, 40.
7:33 am
from what anthony has been saying all along, the windchill factor is definitely going to drop temperatures. hopefully the giants fans won't care. watching at home, much nicer. giants continue to give their fans something to cheer about. in the east bay a special reason to cheer last night as hometown hero giants short stop brandon crawford's rbi single helped move the team to just one win away from the world series title. the short stop who is in the lineup made a name for himself in major league baseball but started in pleasanton where people have been watching him play for years and are excited to see him on the big stage. >> his parents have been season ticket holders for many, many years and now they get to see their son play on the giants. >> crawford was a standout player at foothill high school in pleasanton. since it is possible that the
7:34 am
giants will win in detroit, mayor ed lee managed to get the jumbotron fired up at civic center plaza so fans can join together and watch tonight celebrate all together as they did in 2010 when the giants won the world series last time. there will be a zero tolerance policy for alcohol and other substances. police want to make sure that you know about that. now, stay with nbc bay area for continuing coverage of the giants quest for the second world series title in three years. in developing news this morning, hurricane sandy is poised to become a bigger threat than earlier anticipated as it could join with another storm and affect as many as one in five americans. it could become an 800-mile wide system. people from the carolinas to maine are preparing for the winds and the rain and airlines are offering to change people's flights for free. some airlines here in the bay

area are already canceling flights so if you are planning on flying in the next few days, even beyond the storm, airport officials recommend you keep track of the storm, keep checking your airline website for changes because even if you manage to travel outside of the storm path, it's going to take the airlines a while to catch up. we will be right back.

halloween is just around the corner. that usually means loads of candy. there are ways to mix it up and make it healthy for kids and not get your house egged in the process. snacks are scary nutritious here. candy is okay in moderation. >> moderation across the board in everything that we do. there are healthy alternatives that you can feel comfortable giving your children this halloween and even year-round. >> you brought some of them. some of them i recognize. some i do not. >> the first treat is a nut free
7:38 am
snack. the beauty of the snack is that it is made from sunflower seeds. this is safe for them. what i love is that it comes in five different flavors. cinnamon crunch is tasty and they have dutch cocoa perfect for halloween. delicious. and then one serving you'll get as much protein as a serving of almonds but half of the fat. it's a great alternative for your kids. >> the protein will make them feel fuller as well. you also brought this. it's popular in our house. >> so for halloween they made a 24 pack available at target and other retailers. the great thing about it is that it is gluten free and baked and zero grams of sugar. it's great. alternative to chips. if you compare it to a bag of typical fried chips, you're going to get half of the fat and less calories. >> and they don't complain about that one.
7:39 am
>> they love it. the next snack is a chocolate snack which we all crave and want on halloween. a new line called nuts and spices. they use spice to sweeten bars instead of sugar. so each bar is five grams of sugar or less, which is really great. >> that's really low. >> for parents. a dark chocolate cinnamon pecan. you can see spices give it flavor. >> another savory snack? >> a new line of snacks. tortilla popped chips. you get the flavor you expect but half of the fat which is good. they have salty pepper and then candy. >> you did bring candy. this is different than you might expect. >> organic lollipops and gummy bears. what i love about this snack is they use real fruit flavor. it's all natural. you can get a serving of vitamin
7:40 am
c in three lollipops. >> many of us will bring treats to school. what kind of allergens are we to look for in doing that? >> in the classroom, common allergies include gluten increasing among children and then maybe a little bit of dairy allergy. all of these snacks have some different component. most of gluten free and nut free. >> do something nice for the classroom and then it gets chucked. you had a baby since the last time we saw you. congratulations. >> happy mommy, yes. >> much more ahead on "today in the bay." coming up, why voters may be unwilling to save public education. we'll talk with larry gerston about the governor's fight for prop 30 just ahead. just before dawn. it's a rainy morning becoming a caramel drizzle.
7:41 am
with folgers gourmet selections, you can turn any day gourmet. new roasts, new flavors, and a new look.
7:42 am
7:43 am
good morning. looking live at san francisco. fog there in the distance. warm temperatures by this afternoon. rain later on this week in the forecast. governor brown has stumped the state for unions, corporations have come out for it and prominent educators begged for it but proposition 30 may be headed toward defeat next week. for more on this we bring in larry gerston. proposition 30 remind us of the little details. it's for education on paper. >> big money. combination is compelling. prop 30 is governor brown's initiative to save public education from about $6 billion in cuts. those cuts are necessary because of massive revenue shortfalls. we heard that story before. now in the past those who earn more than $250,000 would pay between 1% and 3% more depending on income taxes for the next several years.
7:44 am
all california ns would pay. it's a money revenue proposition to try to keep the schools from losing a lot of funding. >> i talked to parents every day as i drop my first grader off. a lot of parents i talk with say we're voting for prop 30 and we need more money for schools. however, it doesn't look like it's on course to pass. >> it's a nail biter. no question about it. the latest poll by the public policy institute of california shows 48% are for. 44% against. 8% undecided. okay. it's still winning. not necessarily. even though the yes side is slightly ahead, we know that money related propositions rarely pass unless they have close to 60% going into the election because of last-minute defections. in addition, support has been waning over the last few months. psych the trend line going down. >> there is another proposition on the ballot, prop 38, which is
7:45 am
also supposed to shore up funding for education in a different way. if both of them pass, the governor's prop 30 takes precedent. >> the one with the most number of votes is the one that winds up carrying the day. i don't think we'll have that problem, however. >> what happens if prop 30 fails? people have been talking about the fact that the state budget is based on the fact that proposition 30 would happen. >> yeah. governor brown and the legislature have triggers that will immediately just like that cut out the $6 billion they hoped to raise. according to the governor, this is the governor's figures, that means as much as three fewer weeks of k through 12 public education classes this academic year not to mention dramatic tuition increases at uc, csu, community colleges and they have seen a lot of that over the last few years. >> i think almost everybody agrees that funding for schools is important and funding is in trouble so then why is
7:46 am
proposition 30 not looking more positive? >> that's the question of the day. if everybody knows we're on the vernal ofarmageddon, why is this thing not working out? there are four factors. california's economy. it's recovering. still, we know that it is hurting. unemployment still above 10%. second. a competing ballot measure, the one you were raising a minute ago. prop 38 has sucked out air from proposition 30 with her own separate funding. third, anti-tax opponents are just that. they spend a bundle of money against proposition 30 and fourth, i think this is the most important of all of them. voters don't trust the claims of proposition 30. they have heard it before. year after year. california has had a wacky budget that doesn't work and only to see them balance at the very end. my gosh. they came through again. this is another case for these people. another case of the boy who
7:47 am
cried wolf if you will in california. there's not a lot of credibility here on this issue. then again, there's an awful lot at stake with the same question. >> that's true. i have heard that credibility argument certainly in my little circles. all right. thank you very much, larry. you can get larry's political insight any time, nbcbayarea.com. his blog is prop 0. we still have more ahead on "today in the bay." coming up, giants world series coverage continues from detroit. >> reporter: thank you so much. you know, i tell you, i think this is an absolutely beautiful day here in detroit as giants get ready to take on the tigers in game four of the world series. we want to show you a fan of the giants who has been living in a cave. all year long. she's here. we got her out of the cave. we'll tell you her story in a live report coming up.
7:48 am
7:49 am
>> all right. welcome back. a live look in oakland where you
7:50 am
